Here’s What’s Up in New York January 13-19:
STEAL OF THE WEEK
This one isn’t anything new or specific to New York; in fact, it’s so ingrained in my everyday use, I hadn’t really considered letting anyone know about it. Honey is a Google Chrome extension that tracks prices for you, sources discount codes, and even rewards you for shopping at certain stores. It’s good for the occasional passive reward!
TIMELY IDEAS
Tues., Jan. 14 – CRAFT – Freeform Needle Felting workshop at Atelier Jolie
Wed., Jan. 15 – WINE – Free natural wine tasting to go with the 20% off natural wines sale at Astor Place Wine & Spirits (last time I was there I ran into Alexander Skarsgård by the ports. Just, like, FYI.)
Thurs., Jan. 16 – HAPPY HOUR – Tarot ‘n ‘Tinis ($10 tea-infused martinis!) with Maraschino at Hedge & Hearth at The Standard Plaza
Thurs., Jan. 16 – Tues., Jan. 21 – CHEESE – Murray’s has various deals and treats for National Cheese Lover’s Day (Weekend?), mostly at their Thursday kickoff event
Fri., Jan. 17 – PARTY – Live Nation x P91 Presents: Ski Lodge
Sat., Jan. 18 – INTERACTIVE PARTY – Murder Mystery Mixer at The Wilson (Chelsea)
Sun., Jan. 19 – NATURE – Seal Exploration (!!!) “You may be surprised by what looks like a rock in the distance, is actually a healthy seal.” Please, this is incredibly charming, I’ve got a tear in my eye, I’m not joking!
THIS WEEK’S HOT DATE
Right now, the correct thing to do is commune over broth: with friends, with a potential lover, or with your thoughts. For me, that’s currently translating as a ramen craving. And with broth weather plus folks-seem-to-be-out-of-town-or-something weather, it’s a perfect time to try this double header:
First, you’re going to show up at some early hour to:
This place is no secret, like, at all, literally everyone knows about it. (I personally have not been since fewer people knew about it and I walked in, though). It’s small and famous, so your best bet is to put your name down and hope for the best. If there’s no wait (?!) then, lol, ok lucky you, enjoy your glorious cocktails and a fried chicken sando, at the very least.
But with a wait, head across the street to:
Where you can swiftly and casually enjoy a perfect bowl of ramen. I don’t know about you, but there’s a particular brand of relief I feel in scenarios like this where you only have about 3 menu options. Efficiency of thought on top of efficiency of service…? Dreamy.
Oh, but are you still waiting to get in to DCP? Why not have a glass of wine at:
They’ve got happy hour from 4-7 Monday-Friday, if you happen to catch that.
By now, you really ought to be fine hitting up DCP, so circle on back there. The food and cocktails are genuinely inventive, and the vibe is dark and cool but still laid-back. And if you ever get a reservation instead of doing this whole waiting dance, invite me :)
