THIS WEEK’S HOT DATE
It’s February, which means the blitz of romance-related content for Valentine’s Day has begun. And that’s…FINE. However, I do feel compelled by the forces of language to remind everyone that the correct spelling of that hot, one-night-only menu at any given restaurant is “prix fixe.” It’s f*cking French, okay? And it means set price. Folks have no business telling me I have to spend $165+ to then tell me the menu is “pre-fix” and therefore, what? A word, letter, or number placed before another? CUT THAT SHIT OUT!
I’m not one to hate on Valentine’s day itself though, despite the fact of typically not having a Valentine. My mom has always made a really great Valentine, honestly 🥹. The best one! And I am relieved not to have to pretend to love the bodega flowers somebody’s average son got me this year. (Fellas, go to a florist.) Worthy of mention is that red and pink, together, as a color scheme, is idéale.
But something about aligning romance with the calendar, and capitalism, is…not romantic. Even so, for the love of God and whoever your Valentine might be, do something cute!! Make a handmade Valentine, emotive or corny. Pick up a favorite food item for your lover to enjoy without having to share it with you. Select a book from a used book store and jot a personal note on the title page. Get roses (or cookies, or chocolate…) for your valentine’s roommate or friends. Set her free into Blick with $100 cash that will light on fire if she doesn’t spend it on new art materials. (Ok, that one’s specific, but I’m just SAYING.) Show someone you know them, and they will feel love.
And come back here next week, when I’ll come through with some Valentine’s Day specifics that don’t involve commitment to a prix fixe menu – although, listen, I do support those restaurants getting their coin, they shan’t get my coin. BRB with that!
XOXO,
Rosalee
