Layer up (I recommend cashmere) and get on out.

THIS WEEK’S HOT DATE
Today I’m continuing with last week’s theme and serving up literal “hot” dates, with soup. Here are some of the very best brothy babes in town:
Borscht at Mari Vanna – There’s not much appealing-sounding about beet soup, but I finally ordered this classic on Christmas day and really loved it. (Don’t skip the blinis with red caviar or a house-infused vodka cocktail – my favorite is the Alyosha Popovich.)
Tortellini in Brodo at Rezdora – This Bolognese dish is one of the most special things you can have on a cold night. Order a bottle of Lambrusco to go with it.
Sopa di Pollo at Taqueria Gramercy – this is *the* best deal in town at $7.50, with free chips and salsa. Go during happy hour (4-7, 10-close, all day Sunday) for a $7 fresh margarita.
Soupe à l'Oignon at Minetta Tavern – My favorite FOS in the city: a rich broth with subtle but notable thyme, teeny tiny caramelized onions, and lots of cheese that doesn’t get in the way of your spoon on the way to the aforementioned broth.
Avgolemono Soup at Yia Yia’s Taverna – When I am sick, this is what I crave. (I personally typically order pickup at Eleni’s, which is pretty good and comes with hummus and pita and little dessert nibbles, but is maybe not the best-ever Avgolemono, although it is solid).
Matzoh Ball Soup at S&P Lunch – I love this li’l joint. I usually get sandwiches there, but it’s soup season, so go for this one.
NS1 (Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles In Soup) from Xi’an – This dish is so good, it will knock you out. Literally put you to sleep. Enough to last for two meals. Like really, really good.
Tomato Soup at Daily Provisions – For me, a Danny Meyer restaurant can do no wrong. (It’s also great to have a nice little pick-up option on this list.)
Do you have any favorite soups? Let me know in the comments, and I’ll check ‘em out! We could always make this soup story a trilogy…
